Parenting a child on the autism spectrum can be hard.
Really hard.
There have been times in my own parenting journey when I have felt overwhelmed, unsure of what to do next and desperate to understand what my child needed from me.
But there has also been so much magic.
The joy. The humour. The incredible strengths. The different way of seeing the world. The tiny moments of progress that can mean absolutely everything.
Over the years, I realised something that would eventually become the heart of Mummel Road:
Parenting an autistic child isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about having the right information, the right support and people around you who truly understand.
The things that changed everything for me
There are a few key pillars of information that I have returned to again and again throughout our journey.
They helped me through some of our hardest seasons.
They helped me understand behaviour differently.
They helped me stop asking, “How do I make this behaviour stop?” and start asking, “What is my child trying to tell me?”
They taught me the importance of regulation, connection, communication, predictability and understanding the individual child in front of me.
Most importantly, they helped me see that when things were hard, my child wasn’t trying to give me a hard time — they were often having a hard time.
That shift changed so much.
And that’s why Mummel Road exists.
I built Mummel Road because I wanted other families to have access to the support and understanding that made such a difference to ours.
Not judgement.
Not another list of things you should be doing.
And definitely not the expectation of perfect parenting.
Just practical information, professional knowledge, lived experience and a community that understands that some days are going to be really hard — and other days will remind you just how magical this journey can be.
We believe all children deserve to be understood, and all parents deserve support.
If things feel hard right now, you don’t have to figure everything out today.
Start small. Learn about your child. Get curious about what their behaviour might be communicating. Celebrate the wins that other people might not even notice.
And surround yourself with people who get it.
That’s Mummel Road. 💛
A place to learn, connect, feel understood and hopefully make the road ahead feel a little easier.
