It is always the messiest activity that can bring the most happiness to our kids. This can be especially true for kids on the autism spectrum who have varied sensory preferences and can get a huge amount of enjoyment and relaxation from touching and playing with different textures.

This, by no means, indicates that it is easy for you as the parent or caregiver. You are in the driving seat for the preparation and the creation of this experience.
Take it from me, preparation is key to make this experience fun for everyone, including you.
Things to consider before suggesting the activity to your child include:
– Deciding on a flat surface to use to make the slime
– Having a waterproof cover or mat to put on the table to make sure that any spills can be easily cleaned can reduce stress and conflict if the activity gets messy
– Having individual place mats and bowls for your children if more than one child is doing the activity.
– Have the recipe at the ready to make sure you add in the right amount of each ingredient
– LOTS OF TIME – this recipe does require lots of kneading and mixing of the ingredients, this is not a super quick activity so avoid suggesting it 5 minutes before you need to head to the shops or a school run.
– Some children prefer to wear gloves when they mix the ingredients rather than using their bare hands. Prepare for this and have gloves ready.

Follow this recipe and have fun!
Add the following ingredients into a bowl and knead with your hands until the mixture is not sticky anymore
1. 1/2 cup clear liquid glue
2. 1 tsp Elmers activator or contact lens liquid
3. 1/2 cup shaving cream
4. 1 tbs of glitter or gems
5. Food colouring

Knead the mixture with your hands for at least 20 minutes. If you feel as though it is still too sticky you can add another teaspoon of the activator.

Once the slime is able to be moulded into a ball, you have yourself some delightfully fluffy slime to occupy your children for hours.

Good Luck!
