Community inclusion is something that all children have the right to. There is a wide range of free and paid for community sports and activities that your child may enjoy being a part of. It can feel daunting when you think of approaching the organisers of some community activities and sports. Advocating for your child becomes an important part of your role. See the list below of things to consider before choosing a community sport of activity for you child

  1. Is this an area of interest for your child? Are they motivated to join in and will they benefit from the activity?
  2. Are there some expectations of the organisation that may cause distress or concern for your child? Thinking of these ahead of starting an activity can help prepare everyone for your child’s first try
  3. Ensure you set expectations of your child that match their current capacity. If they get tired after 2 minutes, they may require to leave. Encourage open communication to foster trust between you, the group and your child
  4. Support the organisation if specific communication tools and strategies help you child. Having rules, or instructions in a visual form could be helpful for your child.

With this prep done, you should be able to enjoy seeing your child learn new skills and make new friends.
